Derek S. Barnes is a cellist with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Mr.Barnes has appeared as soloist with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Symphony, the Indianapolis, Anderson and Muncie Symphony Orchestras, Philadelphia Sinfonia, Pennsylvania Sinfonia, Orchestra Concordia,
He has appeared in chamber music concerts with Isaac Stern, Sarah Chang, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Renaud Capucon, and Cristoph Eschenbach.
He was previously a member of the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia, the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, the New York String Orchestra. and the South Jersey Symphony.
Mr. Barnes participated in the Tanglewood Fellowship program under a Leonard Bernstein Fellowship. During that fellowship he appeared in “Yo-Yo Ma at Tanglewood”. He also participated in the summer music festivals of the Taos School of Music, Encore School for Strings, and Congress of Strings.
A graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music, his teachers have included Orlando Cole, David Soyer, William Stokking, and Hans Jorgen Jensen.
He appears regularly with his wife, violinist Meichen Liao Barnes in The Wister Quartet, and numerous trio performances.
His non-musical interests include fine cooking, driving his car on racetracks, cycling, and bow repairing and restoration.
